14 years in prison for rape

HIGH Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe yesterday told a man who raped his 11-year-old step-daughter that the crime he committed was serious in nature and it demanded a high penalty.

Justice Rajasinghe sentenced the 26-year-old father to 14 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 12 years.

He was found guilty of one count of rape.

Justice Rajasinghe said the sentence was to punish the man in a manner that was just and to protect the community from people like him.

He said the sentence signified that the court denounced such acts and the passing of such deterrent penalties should serve as a reminder to would-be offenders.

The judge also stated that the stepfather took advantage of the victim when she was alone at home with him.

He said at such age, children needed to be loved and cared for, but the man had violated his right as a father.
