133 principals remain in acting positions

OF the 143 secondary school principal posts in the country, only 10 have confirmed posts while 133 remain acting in their positions.
Revealing this, Minister for Education Rosy Akbar said this resulted from the last Open Merit Recruitment Selection (OMRS). She said at the moment the ministry had not been processing any new posting.
“All principals and head of departments, assistant principals and vice principals in acting posts are being paid 95 per cent of the confirmed salary,” she said.
“This will continue until the next round of confirmation for our heads of schools.”
Ms Akbar said school principals should not feel insecure about their posts because they were being paid well.
Principals who spoke to this newspaper on the condition of anonymity claimed they were worried about their posts because they could be stripped of it at any time and they could not access loans from financial institutions because of their unconfirmed postings.
Meanwhile, the two teacher unions — Fiji Teachers Union and Fijian Teachers Association — had continuously pleaded with the ministry to take into account the proven performance, qualification and years of experience in the teaching profession when determining teacher promotions.
