A Naitasiri man who raped a minor five times has been given a 12-year 6 months jail-term by the Suva High Court.

The victim was 12 years old when she was raped on the first instance and the crime continued until she was 16.

While passing the sentence, Justice Thushara Rajasinghe said rape is one of the most humiliating and distressing crimes.

“It becomes more serious when it is involved with a child victim. Hence, I find the rape in this nature is a very serious crime,” he said.

The victim and the accused, aged 28 at the time were cousins and the judge said the complainant was sexually abused by a person who was known to her.
