‘$1.4m worth of firecrackers sold’

JUST over $1.44 million worth of firecrackers were sold from January to October this year, according to statistics from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services.

And according to information captured through electronic fiscal device (EFD) sales, the figure marked a 42 per cent decrease when compared to EFD sales recorded for the same period last year.

The figures release by FRCS was in response to queries from The Fiji Times on the value of firecracker sales captured on EFDs installed in retail shops and outlets around Fiji.

In 2018, the EFD recorded sales of $2,481,344 while this year the figure was $1,441,225. FRCS collected $1,088,814 in fiscal duty and VAT on firecrackers in 2018 and $632,410 in 2019.

However, FRCS was not able to provide data on which division and district recorded the highest sales this year.

“Not all retailers are fiscalised, therefore release of such sales data may under value the total sales, and retailers have their own product coding,” said FRCS CEO Visvanath Das.
