DESPITE being surrounded by the ocean, people in Fiji continue to die of drowning with 50 per cent of annual drowning victims below the age of 25 years.

Officiating at the opening of the Lets Swim Training of Trainers workshop in Labasa yesterday, Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said the three-day program was targeted at minimising drowning in our communities.

Mr Vocea said sadly, children and adults alike continued to drown  because of the simple fact that they could not swim.

“I thank initiative like this implemented by the Fiji Sports  Commission which would benefit our communities and children  especially when schoolteachers are being trained to empower children,” he said.
