THE Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge will undergo weight and lane restrictions that will come into effect from next week.

Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) CEO Jonathan Moore said in a statement issued today that they would be carrying out maintenance work to the bridge substructure that would provide support to the deck.

“Our latest inspection has indicated that there is deterioration and, whilst the bridge is still serviceable, we believe it is prudent to review the capacity of the bridge with our consultants,” Mr Moore said.

“Upon discussions with the Land Transport Authority and the Road Haulage Association, we have made a decision to restrict traffic single lane (controlled by traffic signals) during the night and early morning to allow heavy vehicles to cross,” he said.

He said the single lane and weight restriction would be in place until the next six weeks.

Meanwhile, the weight and lane restrictions will begin on Monday, August 20 and are as follows:

· 20 tonne – daytime from 5am to 8pm daily; and
· 32 tonne – single lane only during night time from 8m to 5am daily.

The FRA is planning the replacement of the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge in the next 12 months.
