THE general public has been advised to exercise caution as a trough of low pressure remains slow moving to the west of Fiji and expected to bring rain with it over the next few days.

In an advisory issued from Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Fiji should expect isolated heavy falls as the trough draws closer to the country which may result in flash flooding due to poor drainage.

Pedestrians and motorists are advised to refrain from walking or driving through floodwaters.

Though shallow and still in appearance, floodwaters may be deeper and faster flowing and may contain dangerous debris. Flooding can also erode or wash away road surfaces creating potholes or uneven surfaces which may not be visible.

Parents and teachers are advised to monitor whereabouts of children at all times and to keep them away from flooded drains or waterways.

It is advisable to prepare and keep a family emergency kit at all times that include clean drinking water and canned/dried food for 3 days, a battery powered radio, a torch with spare batteries, medicine, essential documents, clothes, and other essentials.

As an act of preparedness, be certain about the location of your nearest evacuation center. If unsure about your nearest evacuation center, contact your District Officer, District Advisory Councillor, or Village Headman.

Members of the public can contact the Fiji Roads Authority by phone on 5720 to enquire about affected roads and crossings.

The public is advised to continually monitor weather bulletins and forecasts on the radio or on the Fiji Meteorological Services Website at www.met.gov.fj.
