Update: 5:36PM MEMBERS of the general public in the Northern Division are advised of the ongoing work by the Ministry of Waterways in this emergency period to mitigate effects of flooding in Labasa.
Minister responsible Dr Mahendra Reddy said teams of engineers and himself were in Labasa this morning and had mobilised three teams on the ground.
The first team is responsible for the clearing of waterways, rivers, and creeks of debris while the second team is now flushing out important culverts that are clogged up and contributing to flooding.
Team three is doing emergency de-silting using machines and currently, one machine is deployed at Vunika flats and another at Nagigi.
“I have also met the Northern Commissioner (Joseva Vocea) this morning to work together to alleviate negative effects of outflow of water,” Dr Reddy said in a statement.
“The Commissioner has given us a vehicle to assist in transportation for assessing the critical areas that need to be cleared so that water can flow.”
