Waqa’s bail ruling today

HIGH Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe will deliver the bail ruling against a man who was allegedly found in possession of 22 live ammunition today.

The case against Samuela Waqa was transferred from the Magistrates Court to the High Court in order for the judge to review and deliver his ruling on the bail condition of the accused.

Mr Waqa’s lawyer, Iqbal Khan, said his client was in police custody for more than 48 hours and was produced in court after seven days.

Mr Khan said his client was also charged seven days after he was arrested.

He labelled the process as unlawful and had sought the High Court’s advice.

State prosecutor Unaisi Tamanikaiyaroi in her response said the two magistrates who refused bail for Mr Waqa had noted substantial reasons for their decision.

Ms Tamanikaiyaroi said as noted that the two magistrates stated the case was of national interest and that the accused had absconded bail once.

Mr Waqa has been further remanded in custody.
