FIJIAN athlete Eugene Vollmer hopes to surpass his personal best jump of 16.08m in the men’s triple jump event at this week’s Commonwealth Games.
Vollmer is determined to improve on his Commonwealth Games ranking after being ranked 13th overall in the Men’s Triple Jump at his first Commonwealth Games participation in Glasgow in 2014.
The 29-year-old will be participating in three events, long Jump, triple jump and 4x100m relay.
He said preparations towards the event have been good however there was a need for more local competitions.
“We had regular competitions around Fiji but you need to at least have competitions or jump against other athletes from around the world to know where you really stand and make adjustments to how you approach competitions,” he said.
” We weren’t able to have this experience because we didn’t have the funds but when the funds finally came in then we were able to fly over to Australia and compete however their regular season had ended and so the competitions that they’ve had here have only a few selected events.
” Like the past three competitions that they’ve had here did not included the triple jump in their program.”
Vollmer said having quality competitions played a really huge role in sports development.
The Men’s Triple Jump qualifying round will take place this Thursday at the Carrara Stadium Horiz at the Gold Coast.
