SOME villagers of Votua in Ba claim they have been left in the dark regarding black sand extraction from the Ba River delta.

Mining company Amex Resources Ltd was granted a licence to extract black sand after an Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) was conducted in 2012.

According to Votua Village representative Mitieli Sivo, villagers were kept out of the loop during discussions and decisions on the project.

Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources permanent secretary Malakai Finau said the mitigation plans for magnetite sand extraction from the leased area was well covered in the EIA and it was a public document.
