Vendors return, worries remain

MARKET vendors in Ba reopened for business on Wednesday after the National Fire Authority conducted a huge clean-up operation over the past two days.
Debris and silt brought in by floodwaters associated with Tropical Cyclone Josie last Sunday had forced the closure of the market.
However, Ba Market Vendors Association president Nitesh Prasad said vendors were dreading news of another low pressure system this weekend.
“We have been through so many floods and cyclones but this time it is different because we are just starting to recover from what happened last Sunday when we are told that another weather system is coming,” he said.
“People are worried because this is their only source of livelihood.”
The vendors’ spirits were lifted when the Nausori Market Vendors Association visited them with food rations yesterday.
Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum also visited the market and commended the vendors for returning to business within days of TC Josie.
