Unlawful cultivation lands Kadavu farmer in jail

Update: 3:51PM A KADAVU farmer was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by the High Court in Suva last Friday after being convicted of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs weighing 21.95 kilograms.
The father of one was 24-years-old in 2016 when Police raided his farm at Naqara Village, Ono and uprooted 170 marijuana plants.
While sentencing Alifereti Ratokabula, Justice Salesi Temo took into consideration that he was remanded into custody for one year and five months.
Justice Temo also ordered that the drugs be destroyed by the Chief Registrar’s Office with the assistance of Police at the end of the appeal period or as ordered by the Court of Appeal.
Ratokabula who has been given 30 days to appeal to the Court of Appeal will have to serve 11 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
