UniFiji clears air on graduation dates

Update: 2:14PM THE University of Fiji has revealed the reason for the change of the school’s graduation date.
The issue was raised by UniFiji students earlier this week.
According to the institution, the change in dates for its graduation ceremony at its Suva campus was reached through a democratic process through thorough discussions with various staff and stakeholders.
“The budget consultations were not the premier reason for the change of dates,” the university stated.
“There was a significant need for the date change as there are some initiatives that are in the pipeline which need approval from the council before the graduation is held. These initiatives are for the betterment of the students,” it further stated.
UniFiji registrar Kamlesh Arya said when the change of dates was made, students were informed.
“Each graduating student was notified via email or phone call of the change of dates. Between the advertisement of the previous graduation date and notification of the change, students were given a month’s lead time,” Mr Arya said.
He said soon after the query was raised, the university responded to the Ministry of Education that the change in dates was not primarily because of the budget consultations but because of other circumstances.
