THE Fiji university inter-tertiary sports competition kicked started this morning.

Fiji’s Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou officially opened the games at the USP gym with the celebration of international day of university sport worldwide.

The three-day competition will see a total of 135 teams participating in the 20 sports, which will be held at the USP ground and Bidesi Park.

Tuitubou said they wanted to ensure students had the opportunity to participate in different sports and excel from local to international stages.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports ensures that we develop sports in the country and to ensure everyone accesses sports facilities and are treated equally,” said Tuitubou.

Meanwhile, the Fiji universities also celebrated the international day of university sport yesterday.

“Students who have the leadership grounding that sports participation provides are set to be the leaders of tomorrow and a project such as IDUS allows us to offer,” said Oleg Matytsl, the president of International University Sports Federation.

“We are aiming to develop university sport from the grassroots to competition level, from local to international.”
