THE Land Transport Authority installed new traffic counters (TC) at specific locations around Labasa Town.
Authority spokesman Iliesa Sokia said the traffic counters were set up to record data in terms of traffic volume, vehicle classifications and speed.
“This was done in conjunction with the Fiji Roads Authority and MWH consultants for a project on Labasa traffic management scheme,” Mr Sokia said.
“The data is useful to LTA in recording the number of heavy goods vehicles for our load management and enforcement.
“The data also identifies the peak hours whereby we need to be more vigilant in our enforcement operations.”
Mr Sokia said the traffic volume determined if the road capacity was sufficient.
“It also determined the vehicle classification to identify the classes of vehicles using the road which may have some bearing on the pavement condition and design.”
