Tough challenge for Martintar 7s champion

MARTINTAR 7s defending champion Wardens Gold is expected to face stiff challenge for this year’s tournament.
And with the aim to clinch the top award for the third consecutive year, the side will face tough battle against some of the teams in the West including McDonald’s Saunaka, Nawaka, Yamacia, Ratu Filise and Senibiau who all have confirmed their spots for this weekend’s event.
Tournament chairman Timoci Waqaniburotu said the competition would be tougher compared with previous years.
He also commended the support shown by the western teams.
“The organisers of the 5th Martintar 7s tournament were overwhelmed by the huge number of teams from the West that have been confirmed for this year’s tournament,” he said.
“The defending champion Wardens from Suva will be in for a tough competition to defend their title which they won in 2016 & 2017.
Leading the charge from Nadroga is Ratu Filise, Coastal Jet Cagimaira, Sigatoka River Safari Senibua and Nakorokula whereas the Nadi team’s onslaught will be led by Eals Westfield Barbarian, McDonald’s Saunaka, Nawaka, Bamboo Yamacia and Dratabu.
“There are other teams from the highlands of Nadi and Nadroga such as Butoni Turbo, Captain Cook Mosi, Nagado, Bukuya and Uluniwai Combine will be the underdogs at the tournament.”
Also confirming their spots are hotel teams from Intercontinental Fiji, Hilton, Double Tree, Matamanoa, Namotu, Vunabaka and Radisson Bluez.
Waqaniburotu thanked the sponsors for their commitment to support the development of the 7s rugby in Nadi.
“The tournament is supported by Nadi companies Westbus, Jacks of Fiji, Maijhibhai, Sharmas Music, Abduls Car Sales, BLK, Mercure Hotel, Raffles Gateway and Tokatoka Hotel.”
Live entertainment will be provided at the ground while the admission will be $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12 years.
The game will be held at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park from tomorrow and Saturday.
