A MAJOR plan is in the pipeline for 2016 that focuses on the Education Ministry increasing the ratio of teachers to students in primary and secondary schools.
Minister for Education Dr Mahendra Reddy said they were also looking at extending the free education system to pre-school students from the beginning of the second term next year.
“Free education will be available at recognised and accredited pre-schools before admission to primary schools,” Dr Reddy said in his closing address at the Fiji Principals Association Conference in Suva yesterday.
“Our government will establish vocational colleges in each district of Fiji providing qualifications up to Level II certificate in key trade areas.
“This will replace vocational training offered in every high school which is without proper equipment and workshops.”
He said several new initiatives would be announced soon, that were geared towards dealing with improving quality of education, reducing administrative work by teachers, improving teachers’ contact hours and improving classroom teaching.
“All these are to ensure that our education system is highly dynamic, vibrant, responsive and relevant to be able to meet the increasing aspirations of our people.”
