A 39-YEAR-OLD primary school teacher who pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing actual bodily harm has received a suspended sentence by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Sylvia Kaur Singh was handed down a three months imprisonment sentence which was then suspended for 12 months today by Magistrate Deepika Prakash.

This means if Singh re-offends during the next 12 months, she will be imprisoned for three months.

Singh had slapped a nine-year-old, Year 3 student at the school on July 19, 2018.

The court heard that Singh in her caution interview said she slapped the child to calm him down after he told Singh to shut up and get out and also pushed her.

Magistrate Prakash said teachers are entrusted to look after children and being the adult in the situation, the actions of Singh was not justified.
