Taxi driver jailed for abduction and rape

Update: 1:02PM A 37-YEAR-old taxi driver will spend the next 11 years in prison after he was sentenced by the High Court in Suva for abducting and raping a 14-year-old girl in January 2014.
While sentencing Umendra Kumar last week, Justice Riyaz Hamza said the victim had suffered serious emotional and psychological trauma as a result of the incident.
“You have abused your authority as a driver of a public service vehicle and thereby caused a breach of trust by abducting the complainant, taking her to the West and raping her on three occasions,” Justice Hamza said.
He also stated that the mitigations submitted by the accused could not be considered by the Court.
The final head sentence handed down by Justice Hamza was 14 years and nine months of which 11 years and nine months needed to be served in prison by the father of one before he could be released for parole.
