THE purpose of the zone coding number plates is to ensure transparency and to assist enforcement operations.
Fiji’s Minister for Local Government, Housing, Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Kumar clarified this in Parliament today after a question was posed to him from the Opposition MP Aseri Radrodro who asked if the minister could advise the House on the rationale behind the introduction of the colour coding number plates for taxis.
“These plates will enable enforcement officers to easily identify and monitor taxi’s operating within the zone,” Mr Kumar responded.
Mr Kumar said this initiative was part of the recent Taxi Industry Reform, which was one of the key focus in line with the recent amendment to the Land Transport Public Service Vehicle Amendment Regulation 2017.
“It is also to improve and modernise services within Fiji’s taxi industry,” he said.
“This reform includes the demarcation of 34 identified transport zones developed with the intention of improving transport access to meet the increase in customer demand for efficient and reliable taxi services.”
Mr Kumar said the introduction of transport zone was expected to improve customer service.
He said there were some taxi operators operating in other areas a long way from the bases they had been given and it deprived their customers an accessible and reliable taxi service.
