Taro conservation collection

Update: 5:47PM PACIFIC Community (SPC) has the world”s largest Taro conservation collection based at their Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePact) in Narere.

Curator,
Logotonu Waqainabete said CePact received global recognition from the Crop
Trust that provides $50,000 a year for support.

“We are the
world center for Taro because we conserve the largest collection of Taro in the
World and with that we  receive global conservation recognition from the
Global crop diversity of trust that supports us with $50,000 a year to support
the conservation of Taro and Yam collections,” she said.

Mrs
Waqainabete also stated that CePact now has over 2,000 tissue culture varieties
and has five key collections which include Taro, Yams, Bananas, Breadfruit and
Cassava.
