Symposium focuses on women’s role in democracy building

WITH an overall theme on women for democratic prosperity, the Women in Politics Symposium held in Suva today aim to improve public awareness of women’s role as part of democracy building.
Hosted by the Media Watch Group at the St Joseph’s Secondary School hall, the target groups were women leaders either involved in politics or aspiring to be along with civil society organisations and members of the public interested in the issues affecting women.
Speaking today at the first session based on Press for Progress in Our Communities in Fiji and the region, Member of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Naitasiri Vasiti Loki stressed the importance of women in politics in terms of negotiating spaces.
“In terms of negotiating space, when you come to us, make sure to speak our language,” Ms Loki said.
“I am not meaning our language as in our dialects but remember when you come to us, there are systems already in place that are being followed.”
Fiji Council of Social Services executive director Vani Catanasiga said at the regional level, one important thing she had learn was to know when to advocate and know when to dialogue.
