STUDENTS of Suva Sangam College launched the schools’ Language Week on Monday with the theme “Language Diversity, Our Future”.

Chief guest The Fiji Times editor-in-chief, Fred Wesley, addressed the students and spoke about the importance of language as it played an important role in a person’s personality.

“Language helps us to communicate, it helps us to argue, to learn and to negotiate,” Wesley said.

“Language plays a very important role in a person’s personality and of course we use language to inform the people around us of what we feel, what we desire, what we question and how we understand the world around us.”

He also encouraged the students to learn a foreign language as it would be of great assistance in the business world and was also something that would be appreciated in the workforce.

“I would also encourage you to learn a foreign language. Most of us are bilingual, but in the business world it may be helpful to learn another language and this is something that we appreciate and acknowledge at The Fiji Times,” Wesley said.
