MAINTAINING a sustainable environment for maritime communities was one of the key objectives of an ongoing public consultation by the Ministry of Fisheries.

Visiting the Mamanuca Group last week, Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau said the ministry would visit maritime communities to raise awareness on the protection of their marine reserves.

“Sustainability is very important now because of the limited resources that are endangered now,” he said.

“I think people in the islands understand sustainability with their ‘tabu’ areas because they have been a customary practice for them.”

He said while communities had embraced the concept of marine protection, some had resented the idea.
