POLICE have arrested a suspect for his alleged involvement in the burglary of a church in Labasa Town over the weekend.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the youth was in police custody and was still being questioned over the allegation.

It is believed that the items allegedly stolen, which included musical instruments, have been recovered.

However, police have not laid any charges yet.

Ms Naisoro said police had also increased patrol in town after the spate of robberies over the weekend.

The church and two shops in the Gurbachan Singh mall were targeted by thieves.

Victims of this incident have called on police to tighten security in town so businesspeople like them could feel secure.

Shanil Prasad, owner of Sky High Technologies, said he saw a lot of police officers in town on Saturday night patrolling the area and pubs.

“But in the midst of their presence, thieves still broke into our shops and I just hope police do something about securing the business community,” he said.

Ms Naisoro said police had recently increased patrols both on foot and mobile.

“Investigators will be focusing on how the suspect gained entry as the premises is also guarded by a security personnel,” she said.
