WOMEN are defying the odds and have dedicated their lives to helping others in the community.

These were the words of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama president Adi Finau Tabakaucoro as women in Fiji join the rest of the world to celebrate International Women's Day.

To commemorate the event she said they had organised workshop for members reminding them about the important roles they played in their society.

"Last week we did a women's forum where we worked out strategies that needs to be applied to increase women's participation in decision making as well as their participation in Parliament," Adi Finau said.

She said women should be given equal opportunity wherever they were and should be treated equally in terms of decision making and ought to be consulted in all development matters.

Adi Finau said women were the ones that drive lives in their family.

"Well its multi-faceted particularly in rural areas it's the women that drive lives in the rural communities because they gather food, prepare food, they see that they bring up children, see children go to school they prepare children, look after the house and are responsible for all household chores."

She said accessing of services were among the challenges women faced in their communities.

Adi Finau encouraged women to be good role models not only in their families, but in everything that they did to stand up, not only in the churches but in the homes as well.

"When you train a woman you train a family and help shape good citizens and promote a better nation."
