Empower girls and raise awareness of their rights

Fiji Women's Rights Movement Executive Director Nalini Singh
Thursday, March 08, 2018

THE Fiji Women's Rights Movement (FWRM) Grow Inspire Relate Lead Succeed (GIRLS) program will be hosting a creative expressions performance night in partnership with the Emerging Leaders Forum Alumni (ELFA) today.

GIRLS is FWRM's flagship program launched in 2013 under our Intergenerational Women in Leadership team, targeted towards girls from the ages of 10-12.

The program utilises creative methods like art and sports to empower girls and help raise their awareness on their rights. Since 2006, FWRM has worked with girls as part of International Women's Day (IWD) to empower girls through theatre arts and rugby. In keeping with the same practice for the past 10 years, FWRM's International Women's Day celebrations has continued to be associated with the GIRLS activities.

Girls face significant discrimination because of their age, gender and abilities.

Their issues and voices are overlooked, particularly in decision-making spaces, leaving them more vulnerable to the issues they face. Our recent study, Balancing the Scales: Improving Fijian Women's Access to Justice Research shows that children are the victims and survivors in 64 per cent of sexual offence cases prosecuted by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in 2016.

GIRLS have unique experiences and perceptions that can only benefit the work in improving gender equality and creating positive change.

The GIRLS and ELFA will be using creative arts and poetry to raise awareness on issues important to them and advocate for the empowerment of young women and girls. The event will be on Thursday March 8 from 6-8pm at the Ausaid Theatre, USP.

FWRM stands in solidarity with the global celebrations that are taking place as part of the International Women's Day on March 8, to pay tribute to the women's movement and its achievements over the years.
