Ready for Australia

THE Fiji badminton team is working on their skills and fitness level ahead of next month's Commonwealth Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia.

Fiji coach Brent Munday said he was happy with the players progress during training.

"Our team is working through a heavy work period getting ready for tapering which starts next week," he said.

"We have been training at the Yat Sen Secondary School hall in Suva."

Munday had coached Fiji at the South Pacific Games in 2011 and he also assisted the side in the Oceania Championship.

"We have a strong women's doubles pair and mixed doubles pairings which did really well at the Oceania Championships reaching the quarter-finals," he said.

"The team will be led by Andra Whiteside and Karyn Gibson and Burty Moila, all three participated in the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia. All of them had won a gold medal each at past Pacific Games.

"It makes it hard with all our players still working and earning a living as well as trying to do enough to qualify for the games," Munday said

Team Fiji will depart for Gold Coast on March 30.
