Flood mitigation measures

MINISTER for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy says river dredging is by far the largest flood mitigation undertaken in the country in trying to reduce the impacts of flooding in low-lying areas.

Dr Reddy confirmed to Parliament on Monday that seven major rivers in the country had undergone river dredging.

"The following major rivers have been dredged so far — the Rewa River, Navua, Nadi, Ba, Labasa, Wailevu River and Sigatoka (first phase done)," Dr Reddy said.

He said the Sigatoka River was now undergoing the second phase of dredging while the Penang River in Rakiraki would soon undergo river dredging.

Dr Reddy added that 11 municipalities have also received drainage maintenance under the Government's $1,323,798 grant.

"The drainage works used to be levied on farmers to pay for the drainage works, no more of this now.

"For the first time ever a grant of $2 million has been given to address the issue of drainage to water logged farms in the sugar industry."

Dr Reddy also said the Cane Producers Association had provided grants to farmers to assist drainage provision for water logged farms on a 50-50 cost share basis.
