COMMUNITY-BASED organisations in the North will now be able to have more understanding of policies and its relevance.

This, after the Fiji Council of Social Services and the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation brought together eight district level policy dialogue forums to promote more constructive dialogue.

The two-day dialogue forum was held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports boardroom in Labasa.

Vodafone World of Difference candidate and executive director Fiji Council of Social Services Neil Maharaj said the elements of the dialogue would include topics such as understanding policies and its relevance, identifying key players and processes in district divisional and national levels, mapping challenges and capacity gaps in engaging in policy space and identifying strategies to engage.

"The main activities of the project will include organising eight district level roundtable discussions on public policy issues and simultaneously conduct community level (including rural) capacity building workshops for community-based organisations," he said.

"This will also include conducting of a national capacity building training and workshop on policy advocacy and good governance."

Mr Maharaj said the primary aim for district level dialogues were to promote a constructive dialogue to enable more informed policy engagement by district level community-based organisations.

"This is to be undertaken with the recognition that engagement of the CBOs will need to be done in a systematic manner to allow a cross-sectional representation of communities in the grassroots communities," he said.

"This will bring in a diversity of perspectives, experiences and networks that can enrich the national policy dialogue and can enable more civic engagement."
