Local resort launches coral conservation initiative

THE InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa has launched a new marine conservation initiative - a coral gardening program called 'Our Ocean Guardians.'

In a press statement released this week, the iconic Natadola property said the initiative was formulated by the resort's dive operations team, Reef Safari.

Andrew Davidson, area general manager South Pacific at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa said that as a result of the program, the InterContinental Fiji and Reef Safari had worked with guests and successfully planted more than 50 corals over the past four months.

This was done through the resort's Reef-O-Logy activity under the Our Ocean Guardians project.

The program has also seen more than 257 healthy coral plants being grown onsite and this included three more species of heat resilient coral.

"After an intensive threemonth study of the surrounding marine environment, our Reef Safari marine scientists identified an ideal nursery area for coral propagation," said Mr Davidson.

"Our Reef Safari team used the technique of inserting coral pieces between strands of rope to encourage them to grow and flourish.

"The basic rule for the gardeners is always to engage people in hands-on activity that gives something permanent back to the reef.

"We want to give our guests the opportunity to participate and contribute to making a difference towards our future.

"The oceans make up 71 per cent of the world's surface - if we don't make strides to protect it, then who will?"

This project has been integrated into the Planet Trekker Kids Club in their "Marine Life Under the Sea with Our Marine Scientist" program.

The inspiration behind this is the resort and Reef Safari's dedication to educate everyone on the importance of coral reefs and issues impacting the marine ecosystem which when everyone works together, can be lessened or even alleviated.
