Bulk of vendors are women

THERE are nearly 2000 market vendors and 80 per cent are women, says Medical Services Pacific (MSP) country program manager Ashna Shaleen.

She made these comments at a special event organised by MSP in partnership with Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Suva City Council, United Market Vendors Association and Westpac Banking Corporation while celebrating International Women's Day by providing free health services to the women market vendors at the Suva market yesterday.

Ms Shaleen said women market vendors were vulnerable and did not have access to these services because there were constraints behind their stalls and selling their produces.

"We are hoping to get 200 to 400 women market vendors screened and tested today (yesterday) including men," Ms Shaleen said.

"Once this check-ups are done and since we are also doing cervical screenings, the next stage will involve us taking the findings to the labs, which will provide us results and we will come and disseminate these results.

"Should there be adverse results, meaning someone needs continued care, then we will refer them to our medical clinic."

A similar event will also be held at the Nausori market today.
