Laws and provisions

Shayal Devi
Thursday, March 08, 2018

WOMEN need to be made more aware about laws and provisions in place that protect their basic rights to life and dignity.

This was the call from Yavuna Women's Club member Sazimum Mainaaz Bi as women from across the jet set town celebrated International Women's Day in Nadi yesterday.

Ms Bi said over 10 groups from Nadi attended the event.

"We were particularly interested to learn about the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW)," she said.

"There are so many women who don't know what this is.

"There are a number of rural women who don't know about CEDAW and what it is for.

"It is good that Fiji has adopted CEDAW, but women need to be made aware of this."

She said violence against women was one of the biggest issues facing women from all walks of life in Fiji.

"We are women, we have a voice and we need equality.

"We need to be aware of our rights, we need to be treated equally because there is so much that we can do."

International Women's Day will be celebrated around the world today.
