Government to ensure regular road upgrade

"WE cannot tarseal all roads in Fiji."

These were the words of Attorney-General and Acting Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum while responding to a supplementary question by Opposition MP Parmod Chand in Parliament yesterday.

In his supplementary question, Mr Chand said after visiting Bua and Dogotuki side in Macuata last week, he claimed the road conditions were pathetic.

He said a lot of money was invested into upgrading these roads, but it had narrowed down and the standard of the road grading were poor.

Mr Chand also questioned Government on their plans to fix rural roads on Vanua Levu, claiming that some students missed school because public transport did not service their area as a result of poor road conditions.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said there were hundreds of thousands of people in Fiji who wanted their roads tarsealed, but this was impossible.

He said because they could not tarseal all roads in Fiji, it was important to ensure all roads that were not tarsealed were maintained regularly.

"It will be maintained regularly; there is a program for that Madam Speaker," he said.

"I urge the honourable member to look at the flyer we distributed when we delivered the budget. In that flyer it sets out all the major rural roads that we will be addressing, including road work sites in Vanua Levu."

He added that there were a lot of roads in the country that had not been maintained for a number of years.

"There are many vehicles on our roads, many bridges and crossings that were built to substandard or can no longer handle the traffic that we generate."
