Down, but not out

THE Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team may be down, but they are not out yet despite failing to win the USA 7s in Las Vegas on Monday.

The side lost to host USA 19-7 in the semi-final but bounced back superbly to down South Africa 26-22 in the bronze medal playoff.

Coach Gareth Baber and skipper Jerry Tuwai both agreed that there's still light at the end of the tunnel with five more tournaments remaining as they aim to win the HSBC World Rugby 7s series.

Tuwai said the win against South Africa gave the side the opportunity to narrow the gap in the overall HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

He said there were five tournaments remaining and his troops still had a chance to achieve one of their goals.

"We wanted to win the third spot after the loss to the USA to keep our points and spot on top there and I am happy, we have done that against South Africa.

"We still have five tournaments left. We have improved on our points and we need to improve further in the next tournament," Tuwai said.

Baber says with the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby 7s world cup around the corner — one of his goals is to win the 7s series.

"I want to win the series," he said.

"We want to compete in the top four and show consistency in our performance.

"Even though we fell short after the Hamilton win, it's also important to move up to the second spot and improve on our points standing."

In his quest to bounce back at this weekend's Vancouver 7s tournament, Baber said he would make a few changes to the team.

"The boys are getting there and that is the idea, we will be making one or two changes at Vancouver as we want to bring in fresh legs," Baber said.
