Voka to lead team

MOSESE Voka will captain the Fiji Warriors side in the World Rugby Pacific Rugby Challenge (PRC) which starts at the ANZ Stadium in Suva on Friday.

The Warriors will battle Samoa A in their opening match at 5pm.

Coach Senirusi Seruvakula says Voka is a respected individual and should inspire the young players.

"He's been my captain for the past two seasons," Seruvakula said.

"He is matured as a player and disciplined in what he does and these players look up to him. He has been with the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians and (Fiji Airway) Drua teams and this is nothing new to him. He is confident with this team."

Defending champions Fiji Warriors, Samoa A, Tonga A and Junior Japan are part of the challenge this year.

World Rugby had announced earlier that teams will field an under-23 side with five senior players permitted.

"Preparation has gone well with no major injury and everyone is fit to go. We have been defending for three years. The difference this year is that the team is made up of the U23 (players) with five senior players," he said.

"The young players, they understand things quickly. They have come through all the pathways, Deans, U19 and Fiji Academy. I believe that this is the best team I have coached for a PRC," he said.

The Fiji Warriors coach said Samoa would present a tough challenge for the home side. He said Samoa and Tonga would be coming with their regular sides which he believed should provide a good exposure for the Fijian players.

"Samoa is always tough. They will not be coming here with their U23, but will be here with their regular players. They don't have an U23 team, so Tonga and Samoa will have their normal teams which comes every year. For us this is the only way — it is going to benefit Fiji rugby," Seruvakula said.

Serupepeli Vularika has been named vice-captain. Junior Japan will battle Tonga A in the first match on Friday.
