Species protection

Wednesday, March 07, 2018

THE Ministry of Fisheries is working to identify key marine species that were threatened and ensure its protection.

Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau said this exercise was in line with Fiji's COP23 presidency ocean pathway initiative to manage critical coastal and marine ecosystems.

He said the ban on the harvest, sale and export of all hard corals was to ensure the existing threats faced by Fiji's reef system through changing climate and human influences was minimised.

"Work has been done to reduce effort levels from our inner reef system. This is through the FAD (fishing aggregating device)," he said.

"Communities that rely on resources within the reef system have been trained on how to fish from FADs that are deployed outside the reef system.

"While this fishing method is still new, communities are benefiting from this initiative while reducing pressure on the reef system.

"Work is currently ongoing to further develop coastal enforcement.

"This is through further recruitment and training, review of the current law and the review of size limits, and also further policy formulation."
