Fiji ranks high in ear, hearing problems

World Hearing Day was held last week to raise awareness on how to prevent hearing loss and promote ear disease care across the globe.

Dr Oh Chungyeon, who is an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist at the CWM Hospital, said according to the global burden of disease, hearing impairment wass the fifth-ranked contributor of global diseases. Dr Chungyoen said Fiji had more earing problems compared with other countries.

"There is more hearing and ear problems in Fiji compared with other countries.

"According to Pacific Island countries, hearing and ear disease prevalence estimation in 2015, around 80,000 Fijians, is living with hearing impairment, which is considered disabling."

In order to prevent hearing loss, Dr Chungyeon has stated that hearing and ear hygiene was essential and urged people not to insert sharp objects into their ears.
