THE International Women's Day will be commemorated tomorrow.

And one of the leading advocates of women's rights in the country, the Fiji Women's Rights Movement, planned to host an event to showcase what women's rights were all about.

FWRM executive director Nalini Singh said the organisation had always been using innovative ways to celebrate International Women's Day so this year, they wanted to expand on their creative arts and decided to have a performance night filled with poetry. The event will be held at the Australia Pacific lecture theatre performance space tomorrow."

The global theme for this year's celebration is "Press for Progress".

"For the first time, our Grow Inspire Relate Lead Succeed (GIRLS) program which consist of 39 young girls between the ages of 10-17 will be working closely with our Emerging Leaders Forum Alumni (ELFA)," Ms Singh said.

"On the night, the GIRLS, young women and even some of the parents will showcase and perform what they have learnt so far."

She said the GIRLS and ELFA members would be performing on wide and diverse range of issues that young women and girls faced, linking it to the global themes "Press for Progress" and the United Nations Commission Status of Women, "Time is Now: Rural and urban activists transforming women's lives".

"For FWRM, GIRLS and ELFA, their time is now to transform the lives of young women and girls and press for progress through activism," she said.

"There are several issues that the young girls and women are raising, including issues around safety, violence, abuse, bullying and body shaming."

She added the number of rape cases they heard was alarming and the event would raise awareness on these issues.

"It is another platform that young girls and young women are using to voice their issues and struggles," she said.
