Handicraft centre an attraction for tourists

THE Savusavu Handicraft Centre located in the middle of Savusavu municipal market, has been a tourist spot in Cakaudrove for the past 12 years.

With an aim to strive towards a successful future in the tourism industry, manager of the handicraft centre Rosalia Sui said the secret behind their success was based on their Bula smile.

"We have always put our customers before everything else and giving them our Bula smile is part of our service to them," she said.

Ms Sui said majority of the handicraft items sold at the centre were her own creations.

"We started off with nothing, no cash just my idea of making jewelleries and sewing pushed us this far," she said.

"Our business mostly depends on the cruise ship that brings in tourists to Savusavu and when there is any sort of cyclone or strong wind warnings, tourists won't come around until the time they know the weather is all good for them to travel across."

Ms Sui said her work as a professional artisan had taken her to so many places.

"I have travelled abroad few times before in terms of promoting my handicraft items and it doesn't just end here in Savusavu but my work is well known to my customers from across the world," she said.

"Our handicraft centre team was one of the participants at the Pacific Arts of Festival in Guam 2016 and we were one of the very people that represented the Fiji and we received an award as the contemporary crafts person of the year in 2015 so those were few of our success."

Ms Sui said even though they started from scratch, they have reached a stage where their art work had been known to women of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

"Our art work is sold for $300, some for $50 and cushion and pillow case are sold at $10 each and we earn around $800 to $1000 when the cruise ship stops in Savusavu," she said.

"As a woman, I encourage all those other young mothers and ladies out there to always strive for excellence and work towards what your heart yearns for.

"The sky is the limit, take your first step now," she said.
