A KADAVU farmer, who is charged with one count of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs, allegedly admitted to police that the farm where the marijuana was uprooted from was his, the High Court in Suva was told yesterday.

This was revealed by police Corporal Tumanu Ravonu, who was the second prosecution witness to take the stand, as the trial continued before Justice Salesi Temo yesterday.

Mr Ravonu said the officers went to the accused's home after informing the Naqara Village headman in Kadavu of the drug raid they conducted on a nearby farm. Alivereti Ratokabula is standing trial before Justice Temo for the alleged offence. It is alleged on September 26, 2016, a total of 170 marijuana plants was uprooted from Mr Ratokabula's farm at Naqara Village.

Mr Ravonu said the team decided to go in numbers to inform the village headman of the incident because in the past, villagers used to attack officers, who conducted drug raids on the island. He said Mr Ratokabula's wife was also standing beside him when they cautioned him of their visit to his farm. He said the accused was attentive and allegedly admitted the farm was his and that he was going to be responsible for what he had done.

The trial continues today.
