Men granted bail

FOUR men charged with obtaining property by deception were granted bail by the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.

Shalendra Sen Sinha, 39, of Saweni, appeared alongside Etuate Suguturaga, 41, of Nabua, Umesh Chand, 38, of Saweni, and Imtiaz Imran Ali, 37, of Viseisei Back Rd.

The men were alleged to have obtained $31,345 worth of goods, including 110 bags of Crest chicken valued at $16,335, four cartons of chicken breast worth $4480 and $10,530 worth of lamb chops between December 1, 2017 and March 1, 2018.

They were rearrested by police yesterday because of pending fraud cases involving four companies in the Western Division — Fiji Meats Ltd, Ton Ton Hardware, New World Warehouse Ba and Islands Electric — involving a sum of $251,319. West divisional prosecuting officer, Assistant Superintendent Anil Prasad objected to bail.

Defence lawyer Iqbal Khan pointed out that the accused persons were held in police custody for more than 48 hours when they should have been presented in court before that time.

After deliberation, Magistrate Mosese Naivalu said powers of detention rested with the High Court.

He bailed the accused on $3000.

Mr Naivalu also said recovered perishable goods worth $7382.35 were to be photographed and released to the rightful owner, Nausori Meat Company Ltd.
