Fiji falls in semis

LAPSE of concentration and basic mistakes were the major setback, which led to the downfall of Fiji Airways Fiji 7s team, in their 19-7 cup semi-final loss to USA at the USA 7s in Las Vegas yesterday.

The side started the game strongly with Sevuloni Mocenacagi scoring the first try in the first spell before the host team shut down the Fijians and scored three tries to win the game.

Fijian forward Matai Leuta was impressive —— scoring a try for the USA while paceman Perry Baker scoring a brace to take the USA score line beyond reach.

Fiji head coach Gareth Baber said the boys committed a few mistakes that changed the momentum of the game.

Baber said his troops gave their best but the host team executed their game smartly to win the encounter.

"No lack of hearts and endeavour in the game, we worked hard but lapse of concentration allowed the momentum we built in the first half to erode in the second half," said Baber.

"Probably the first try after the half time by Perry Baker from his own line really changed the game.

"We had them where we needed them at that stage and we let them off, they got the momentum going, next they kicked off and got a little bit momentum and that's the game really.

"We wrestled it back and had an error in their 22m line and they put pressure on us as we were at the wrong end of the field."

Meanwhile, the boys bounced back to beat South Africa 26-22 for the bronze medal playoff.

Baber said the boys had talked about the game and were eager to make amends at the Vancouver 7s this weekend.
