VICKY Wu, is the future of Fiji Table Tennis Association, says president Anthony Ho.

Wu, 12, will be the youngest player in Team Fiji at the 2018 Commonwealth Games next month at Gold Coast, Australia.

Wu was awarded the Young Male Athlete of the Year award at the Fiji sports awards in Suva on Saturday night after a good outing last year. He has been ranked number three in the national Fiji men's division. He also won a bronze medal at the Oceania Championships and Pacific Mini Games last year.

"I am expecting him to perform to the best of his ability as we would be competing against some of the world's best table tennis players," Ho said.

"He may not have that experience compared with the other table tennis players. He had played against some of the best players in the Pacific at cadet level so it will be a big step up for him.

"He is our future."

Wu created history by defeating a top player from Thailand in the 2017 China cadet and Junior Open championship.

"It would give him an opportunity to see where he needs to be in the next few years, but locally he is the best in the competition," he said.

"He is a big asset for Fiji. He will be turning 13 this year and he still has three years in the cadet category.

"He is a medal potential for Fiji in future as he has a lot of years ahead of him."

The Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4-15.
