Uprooted plants worth millions

A TOTAL of 170 marijuana plants were uprooted from a farm at Naqara Village in Kadavu during a joint drug operation on September 26, 2016, the High Court in Suva was informed yesterday.

It is alleged on September 26, 2016, a total of 170 marijuana plants were uprooted from Mr Ratokabula's farm and the plants were estimated to be worth millions of dollars.

Prosecution witness Sergeant Semi Vanuinuivinaka, who took the witness stand, said the officers were tipped off by a villager.

He said the farm was not far from the village and it was easy to locate.

Sgt Vanuinuivinaka said the drug operation was conducted by officers from the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).

The Kadavu farmer, Alivereti Ratokabula, who is charged with one count of unlawful cultivation of marijuana is standing trial before Justice Salesi Temo.

Sgt Vanuinuivinaka, who had led the drug raid team, said it took the officers about 20-30 minutes to uproot all the marijuana plants from the farm.

He said he then transported the marijuana plants by boat to Vunisea Police Station.

The policer officer also stated that a group of RFMF and police officers assisted him transport the marijuana plants and another team of officers went to the village to search for the accused person.

The trial continues today.
