THE National Federation Party officially introduced three of their new provisional candidates at a meeting in Lautoka on Friday night.

The new candidates — Nature's Way Cooperative (Fiji) Ltd CEO Michael Brown, law student Apenisa Vatuniveivuke and Lautoka businessman Ajay Kumar.

NFP leader Professor Biman Prasad said the party was ready to go up against its opponents for a seat in Parliament.

"The election in 2018 can be held as early as May or late as November as per the Constitution the Parliament can only be dissolved after April 6 so we at present do not know exactly when the election date is going to be announced by Government," he said.

"It is their prerogative and we have to wait for that day for the election, however, we need to prepare for the election.

"It is very important for me to explain to you what the present environment is in terms of politics in this country. The Prime Minister, with his Attorney-General, has been in power for the last 12 years, not just for four years.

"And when we fought the election in 2014 under an imposed Constitution, we in the Opposition were hopeful that when Parliament was put in place, when there was, finally there was, a democratic elected government, we would have genuine democracy in this country.

He claimed the truth was otherwise.

"We are under a very restrictive environment," he claimed.

"I have tried to go into dialogue with this Government and I have tried to talk about changing some of these restrictive laws that are still in place so that people can have their freedom.

"We have had no response."

He said with their current crop of provisional candidates, the party was confident it would bring change.

Questions sent to the Prime Minister's and Attorney-General's offices have remained unanswered.
