Tropical depression warning

THE Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) is monitoring a tropical disturbance located 500 kilometres west-northwest of Nadi at 12 midday yesterday.

TD09F also has a moderate to high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours.

FMS director Ravind Kumar said the system remained slow moving and was anticipated to move southwest-ward and remain over open waters.

"TD09F is expected to intensify into a tropical depression in the next 12 to 24 hours while remaining over open waters to the west of the Fiji Group," he said.

"It does not pose a direct threat to Fiji at this stage; however, rain and strong wind associated with the system are anticipated as it intensifies.

"Within the next 24 to 48 hours, the major concern is continuing heavy rain, floods, strong and gusty wind associated with the system."

A strong wind warning is now in force for land areas of Rotuma, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, western Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and nearby smaller islands.

A strong wind warning remains in force for all Fiji and Rotuma waters while a heavy rain warning remains in force for the Fiji Group. A flood alert is also in place for all low-lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to major rivers of Fiji and for areas downstream from Vatukacevaceva Station to Rakiraki Town.

"Expect periods of rain, heavy at times with squally thunderstorms to continue tomorrow (today) over most places.

"Localised heavy falls increases the chances of flooding of low-lying areas in the coming days as more rain is forecasted. Some easing of rain can be expected from Wednesday."

Mr Kumar said with heavy rainfall forecast, high tide and water in the rivers being at medium to high flows, there was an elevated risk of flooding at catchment level in the coming days.
