SODELPA candidate Dr Mere Samisoni has been awarded a seat in Parliament after the passing away of Member of Parliament Ratu Sela Nanovo last month.

Electoral Commission chairman Suresh Chandra said the commission had awarded the vacant seat to Dr Samisoni following the unavailability of Ratu Jone Kubuabola who was the next eligible candidate for the seat after the passing of Ratu Sela.

In an interview yesterday, she said while she was delighted to be given the opportunity to serve the people, the commission had not informed her of the fact that the vacant seat had been awarded to her.

Dr Samisoni said the commission had only written to her asking whether she was available to take up the seat and she had confirmed her availability.

She said in Parliament, her area of focus would be democracy, human rights and improving the country's infrastructure.

Dr Samisoni had 1855 votes in the 2014 General Election.
