Monday, March 05, 2018

THE Young male and female athletes of the year awards were won by Fiji Table Tennis Association during the 2017 Fiji Sports Aawrds at the FMF Gymnasium on Saturday night.

Grace Yee, the number one Fiji women's player of 2017, won the Young Female Athlete of the Year award, while Vicky Wu won the Young Male Athlete of the Year award.

Yee won a bronze medal in the Oceania Championship last year, three medals at the Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu last year, and won a bronze medal at the 2017 China Cadet and Junior Open Championship.

She became the first table tennis player in the Oceania to win a medal in the championship.

Yee, 15, defeated the number one ranked Oceania player from Australia during the Oceania Youth Olympic Qualification Championship to qualify for the Youth Olympics.

"Balancing school and training has been tough, but I am grateful to my parents for their support. They helped me to achieve my dream," she said.

"Stress has been one of the major challenges that I face, but I managed to overcome it by having faith in myself."

Yee is a student of Jai Narayan College in Suva.

Meanwhile, Wu, 12, has won titles in his age category right up to the under-18 level.

He is ranked number three in the Fiji men's division.

He won a bronze medal during the Oceania Championship and Pacific Mini Games.

At the 2017 China Cadet and Junior Open Championship, he created history by becoming the first player from the Oceania to beat a top player from Thailand.

The Yat Sen Primary School student said he was ready to take part in his first ever Commonwealth Games.

"This will be a great platform for me to achieve my target," he said.
